Research

The focus of the Artificial Intelligence based Design and Manufacturing Laboratory is to develop intelligent tools and methods used by the designers and the manufacturing engineers to reduce the time taken in the process and improve the Product Life cycle. The lab develops interactive visualization and decision making tools that take advantage of general purpose computing on modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs).

With the development of new methods for accelerating CAD algorithms using the GPU, the design process has been simplified and accessible to everyone. However extensive knowledge about the manufacturing technology is required to develop designs that can be successfully manufactured. We propose to develop a decision support framework for cyber-enabled manufacturing that can be used to ensure the manufacturability of a design during the design process. We hope that this research will improve the state-of-the-art in engineering design by developing an integrated CAD and analysis environment that will drastically reduce the cost and overall time to market for a component by reducing the number of design cycles.
